We work with a strong commitment to maximize positive impact and opportunities for generating shared value, while preventing and minimizing negative impact through dialog and engagement with the communities.
SOSCO has a mandatory and global regulation in place to minimize the impact that the company's actions could have on local communities by occupying space, building infrastructure and transporting products and waste.
The company generally establishes itself in the countries where it operates as a source of job and wealth creation through its local purchasing and contracts, as well as the fees and taxes paid for its extraction activity, which also benefit the communities
SOSCO's activities range from the exploration of lands in remote parts of the world in search of oil and gas, processing crude oil and gas through its large industrial complexes, to the most fundamental supply of energy by marketing oil products for motor vehicles or heating.
We channel our social investment projects through the company's businesses and corporate areas, voluntary work done by SOSCO employees.
We voluntarily contribute to the development and well-being of the local communities living close to the areas in which we operate. We strive to ensure that we satisfy the needs expressed by the community through our social investment projects. We seek to meet the expectations identified in the communities through this commitment, always with a focus on long-term benefits for the communities so that they can acquire their own self-development tools.
Types of projects in the community
At SOSCO, we meet the expectations identified in the Omani community, based on criteria such as raising awareness, donating to schools and local associations, culture and sport. Decisions concerning what and where to invest are taken after analysis of follow-up studies, through ongoing dialogue with stakeholders and specific actions. The major areas we work in are:
Education and training
SOSCO allocates a large portion of its social investment expenditure to education and knowledge creation projects in the concession areas as we consider these to be the basis and the best tool for reaching sustainable development. The education programmes are mainly directed at our employees in English courses, Operational and technicalcourses which are managed by the PDO.
In this area, the main aim is to generate the capacity for development, which constitutes one of the main aims of the socially committed activities of the company. SOSCO selects projects that benefit the greatest possible number of people and that can be sustainable over time. Capacity-building programmes are also carried out with a view to incorporating the local population into various areas of our business.
SOSCO collaborates in projects and programmes that contribute to improving the healthcare conditions and quality of life of the local communities in the areas where the company operates.
SOSCO collaborates in undertaking social integration projects and events designed for local community groups within the concession areas like Thumryt, Maqshanin addition to other programmes to improve the well-being of individuals and social groups.
These projects are intended to raise awareness regarding the care and protection of the environment and promote care for biodiversity.
Arts and culture
SOSCO supports the development of projects relating to the dissemination of the Omani local culture. We work with museums, exhibitions and local authorities on a wide range of disciplines, with particular emphasis on promoting local Omani culture and artistic heritage.
